Protect yourself against bad drivers - You could be a perfect driver who has never put a wheel wrong, but you can't control the standard of other drivers on the road, which could explain why car insurance is the only compulsory form of insurance in the UK.
It is so common these days, you are minding your own business, happily driving along, then all of a sudden a car is pretty much in your boot as some petrol head decides to tailgate you. They then decide to overtake (usually on a corner) putting you and the oncoming driver at risk as well as themselves.
It is these drivers who make the roads unsafe and who are more likely to crash and put your car insurance premiums up. And, realistically, there is nothing you can do apart from continue to drive well and remain calm in situations that could easily provoke road rage.
So, next time someone decides to pull out in front of you or tailgate you, remember to remain the perfect driver and the picture of calm as they get themselves wound up whilst trying to get one car ahead in a traffic jam!
Car insurance can protect you against costs caused by poor drivers and their lack of thought for other drivers. However, the best advice is to never trust another car on the road, always check for yourself if the road is clear and be on the ball and ready to react as you never know when someone might cut you up.
When it comes to level of car insurance, it depends on the value of your car as to which level you go for. However, if you find yourself genuinely concerned about other drivers and take pride in your car, then fully comprehensive cover is recommended.
But, if you are less concerned about your car and the damage caused by others to your car, third party only insurance could be the way to go as it costs less.
One aspect of car insurance to bear in mind when shopping for car insurance is the excess. This is the amount that you agree to pay before making a claim and can range from as little as £25 to more than £500.
The excess is particularly worth considering if you are concerned about damage done to your vehicle by other drivers because if the other driver runs off you will be left footing the bill and a hefty excess will just add insult to injury.
However, again it depends on the value of your car. Obviously if your car is only worth £500 you want the excess to be substantially less than this amount.
The important thing to remember though is that as long as you are insured and remain aware of other less than perfect drivers on the road, there is no point in worrying yourself sick about the damage that could be caused by another driver.
